STRIPES SKIN

Designing this project started with a conflict. Given a small site and our aspiration as well as the client's to create transparency and loads of light. Open is exposed. Exposed in not suitable for small sites. It demolishes privacy. In order to overcome our conflict we designed a modern "mashrabiya", made of painted steel, which stretches all around the building, creating a second skin. The system can fold to a horizontal state in places where exposing is positive and necessary, and refold to a vertical state where hiding is in need. The skin is more than just a practical functional accessory. It is the design theme of the entire project.

the project reacts to the skin no less than the skin reacts to the building.
